Thin sections of rocks

This type includes consistent or friable rock samples NO water-sensitives.
The sample is dried in stove and, if necessary, consolidated with epoxy resin.
The flattening and thinning operations are performed using grinding powder dissolved in water.

Thin sections of sand or cuttings

This type includes loose sands or cuttings samples no water-sensitive.
The sample is dried in a stove and embedded in polyester resin blocks.
The flattening and thinning operations are performed using grinding powder dissolved in water.

Thin sections of ceramic, mortar and plaster

This type includes samples water-sensitive.
The sample is dried in stove and, if necessary, embedded in polyester resin blocks or consolidated with epoxy resin.
The flattening and thinning operations are performed using grinding powder without water.

Thin sections of soils or loose undisturbed sediments

This type includes water-sensitive samples in plates or boxes Kubiena.
The sample is air-dried without artificial heating and embedded with polyester resin diluted (exceptionally epoxy). The optimal time for the impregnation is 2 or 3 months.
The flattening and thinning operations are performed with abrasive without the use of water.

Thin sections polished

This type of thin sections usually are for electron microscopy observation or reflected light.
Thin sections described above are polished with diamond paste of various steps in the following order of grades
15 microns - 6 microns - 3 microns - 1 micron and, if required, 0,25 microns

Doubly polished sections

This type of sections are usually destined to the study of fluid inclusions in the rocks.
The rock block is polished with diamond paste of various steps in the order described above, bonded to the glass slide with the resin soluble in acetone, sectioned to the required thickness and polished both the faces.
The removal of the slice is obtained by immersing the glass slide in acetone for a few hours.

Maximum size of the slice is:
25x42mm
